p. 10
Every job is different and every project engineer will likely handle a given job differently. When people and politics are added to the equation, it gets even more complex. Nevertheless, it’s important to have a list of duties to remind you to concentrate on all the facets of your job. Without the list, you’ll be drawn to the crisis of the moment, and forget the balanced approach that leads to achieving excellent results. So take this list of duties as your starting point, and create your own as you approach your project engineering job.

Duties of a Project Engineer

  • Plan and control the basic work
  • Lead safety
  • Identify, assess and mitigate risks
  • Achieve quality standards
  • Control schedule within the plan
  • Control costs within the budget
  • Control interfaces
  • Manage changes
  • Solve problems and commercial issues
  • Lead the effort

Remember, your role is to exercise total area responsibility! If one of your specific duties isn’t on the list, add it.

Let’s look at those duties in more detail. Some of the duties that may not be familiar to most new engineers are covered in a little more depth.
